Nike Human Race 10k - 24 October 2009

What happened to us that the whole family is sitting in the car on a Saturday night to go to paticipate in a 10k run? That was Luke's ligitimate question. I fear it's all my fault. Well, I don't know...

So we ran the Nike Human Race Light Run in Berlin during the second last day of the Festival of Lights. Nike organised a worldwide running festival in over 25 cities including New York, Buenos Aires, Singapore, Vancouver, Tokyo, Mexico City, Boston, Rome, Shanghai, Seoul, Oslo, Stockholm, and many others. We all did very well in this freaking cold - very proud of you Sandra, Luke and Paps! I was chilled to the bone afterwards and my incipient cold developed well over night :(. And here are the statistics (the girls brought home the bacon by the way - wohoo):

Linda 56:45 (place 2888), Sandra 1:02:20 (3997), Luke 1:02:20 (3998), Paps 1:03:35 (4245).

Festival of Lights - 14-25 October 2009

For the fifth time the Festival of Lights turns Berlin into a sparkling metropolis with a firework of illuminations and events for two weeks. World-famous historical landmarks and spots in Berlin, e.g. the Brandenburg Gate, the Television or Radio Tower are staged impressively by means of light, events, projections and fireworks.

My little Bro starts Uni - 03 October 2009

Hey Luke you have always been the one on whom I saw how old I am getting. And now you start studying. Wish you all the best and heaps of fun!

Lukas got an offer from the University of Greifswald and will do a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Science, General Studies and English Language and Literature. YES at least one walking English dictionary in our family! He found a nice flat share with three other girls close to uni and city centre. This Saturday was spent furnishing his room. But please even plants need a little bit of love... this is apparently not practiced as you can see in the picture - not yet I hope :).

Greifswald is situated 200km North of Berlin and borders the Baltic Sea. In 2008 it was declared as Germany's youngest city which is no surprise I think, 15,000 uni students among 50,000 inhabitants. Sounds more like party than lectures...

September 2009

Berlin Marathon - 20 September 2009

35.783 finishers from 107 countries mean a lot of water cups...

Freedom is running...Freedom is running...

Anni and I signed up as volunteers for the 36th Berlin Marathon and it was as expected great fun. Plus I am happy about my fancy yellow running jacket as winter is coming in big steps unfortunately. We were water cup filling machines :) at kilometer 40. Well, Haile passed us after 01:58. The last group of three women came 06:21 after the gun. And in between we saw people in really every emotional condition you can imagine. I saw Peter a cool spinning instructor at gym actually. Or better he saw me as he knew I was standing there. And damn he looked fresh. At this point of the day it was just not possible to pick out any face from this crowd. Way too many people. It reminded me of the Sydney Running Festival exactly one year ago and how I fought for these 9km *lol*.

This year was the 20th anniversary of the first Berlin Marathon which went through the Brandenburg Gate - the day the Marathon went to the East. I've read that it was Australia's Steve Moneghetti who took the historic marathon in 1990 with a world class time of 2:08:16. Coincidence?? I should start to believe in signs... Anyway. Susy and Sophia came around and joined the million spectators who cheered on the runners, inline skaters, wheelchair competitors and hand cyclists on this weekend. Now I am keen for my first marathon one day ;)!

Ouchy ouch - 18th September 2009

YES I know. Now all you couch potatoes out there have your evidence. Sport ist Mord - how we say in German - Sports is murder... The pic shows my beautiful foot 7 days after my most painful run so far :). I haven't taken a pic earlier as the swelling would have blown up the format. Haha. No it's all good. But interestingly my orthopaedist found an old fracture. It is years ago that I sprained my ankle the last time. Well actually broke it. He said no running for three weeks and it will be completely fixed in six weeks. Mhhh, I already signed up for the Nike Human Race - Light Run during the Festival of Lights in Berlin on 24th October. So still 28 days to go...

Hey Papsi! Sometimes life is a challenge - meet it. Whatever decision you make it will be the right one. You are the best dad of this entire world! Love you! xoxo

Celebrate we will - Because life is short but sweet for certain hey - We climb on two by two - To be sure these days continue - Things we cannot change

August 2009

12th IAAF World Championships in Athletics berlin 2009 - 15-23 August 2009

Just some impressions of the World Championships in Athletics. Unfortunately I didn't make it to the Olympic Stadium. But I saw the 20km Female Race Walk and the Male Marathon as the courses led through the inner city. Unbelievable how many people were alongside the track...

10km City-Night - 01 August 2009

A new possibility to spend a Saturday night: running. Well it took me hours, better days to convince my little baby bro heart to sign up for this event. Sophia agreed within three seconds. We have to work on this Luke :). Love you... 10km flat and straight except for one u-turn. Luke the chicken did just the 5km round. No hey I am proud of you. And I loved your red face and your short of breath comment - one step more and I die. Haha. And I still believe you turned red because Sophia and I screamed so loudly for you when we waited for our start at 8.30pm. Where was your shout when we finished? We have to work on this Luke :). Thanks guys and I like our new orange running shirts even though we look like the Berlin garbage collection service now in our partner look...

U2 are back in town - M A G N I F I C E N T - Olympic Stadium 18 July 2009

This was definitely the ultimate best show I have ever seen in my entire life. Damn - just incredible! I wished it would never end :). U2 are currently on their worldwide stadium tour titled the U2 360° Tour as it features a 360-degree audience configuration in which the fans surround the stages from all sides. Well I have read that just the stage needs 55,000 kWhrs... COOOOOL :). I went there without a ticket but got one for just 40% of the original price plus it was a first row spot. Even COOOOOLER :). And the COOOOLEST: they had Snow Patrol as support band. I loved it. My heart bounced when they played Run. Light up, light up as if you have a choice. Even if you cannot hear my voice I'll be right beside you dear. How I love this song... So I was happy with the concert even before it really started. But this was all nothing against the subsequent show. There is no simple description for it when 100,000 people in a full stadium hold up their lighters and sing out loudly ONE. I still get goosebumps when I think about it.

One love, One blood, One life
You got to do what you should, One life, With each other
Sisters, Brothers, One life, But we're not the same
We get to, Carry each other, Carry each other
One...life

It is just the Baltic Sea and not the Pacific... Usedom Island 11+12 July 2009

Yes I think I annoyed a couple of people with my permanent statement. But no waves and a water temperature of just 14°C and that in summer cannot be anything else than a description of the Baltic Sea. It is just the Baltic Sea and not the Pacific... We had a great weekend in Ückeritz on the Baltic Sea Island Usedom where some friends participated in a beach volleyball tournament. The nights in our lovely g-string tent were freaking cold (summer, hello where are you???) but the days on the beach and the sand between our toes felt good. It overwhelmed me a couple of times as I am longing for the faraway. And staring at the endlessness of the ocean and the sunset at the horizon doesn't make it better...

Until the bitter end... Bis zum bitteren Ende - Die Toten Hosen on stage 03 July 2009

Whispering voices in my head, sounds like they're calling my name.
I don't like it when you get too close, I don't wanna be under your thumb.
Why can't you just leave me alone? Solitude is a faithful friend.
I'll sort my life out on my own, I just want this pressure to end.
And I'm sick of this pain in my head.
And I'm scared I'm being pushed - being pushed again.

June 2009

Post Half Marathon Weekend in Flensburg - 29 June 2009

Summer. Finally. At least for one day it felt like holidays.

I had to learn another lesson this week that made me think if some things and encounters are worth it or if it will always lead to disappointment in the end. I will never get used to this feeling. I wish I didn't care so much about it...

1436kcal or 02:06:27 for a freaking medal... - Hamburg Half Marathon 28 June 2009

What a great experience. And damn I know why I like Berlin. It is flat - super flat flat. And Hamburg is neither flat nor flat flat nor even less super flat flat. It is bloody hilly. Well it is maybe a bit exaggerated but I was wondering not only once why the course didn’t lead just the other way round. But nevertheless I fulfilled my personal target which was running my first half marathon in a nice and easy 6mins/km pace. My end time of 2 hours 6 minutes and 27 seconds couldn’t be more perfect for the 21.1km. And it felt good the whole time although I was sick the week before and didn’t really train for 8 days in a row. In the end it wasn’t as challenging as I thought thanks to my preparation I guess. I had a little tear in my eye afterwards as I remembered one year ago when I was just wondering how people can do this and now I am one of them :). It was a big tear actually...

In total 5,157 people participated and Gilbert Kipruto Kirwa from Kenya won in 01:01:52 with a new track record. Well this guy overtook me around kilometre 4 as the first 10 kilometres were 2 x 5-km-laps. Oh yes he was fast. I have no idea how someone can run 20km/hr for more than an hour – impressive. I became place 2938, gender-place 621, age-place 220 if someone is interested in statistics *lol*.

Thanks Mum, Paps and Luky my true honest fans for your support. I know it was a cheering-Linda-on-marathon for you as well including running around to watch out for me. It was great to hear your encouragements at km 4, your high fives at km 10 and - the best - to see you at km 20 when I didn’t expect it. And now I promise I will talk less about training, kilometres, shoes, calories, electrolytes, low-fat, and everything else that have made you rolling your eyes... :) Hab euch lieb!!! Ihr seid die Besten!

The half marathon course passed a lot of tourist attractions. The start was on the Reeperbahn in Hamburg’s red-line district St.Pauli next to Germany’s most popular police station Davidwache at the cross street Davidstraße where street prostitution is legal during certain times of the day. Then protitutes behind windows are waiting for customers. The run continued on with passing the traditional fish market, along the harbour into HafenCity, and then went up Aussenalster to the finish near Rothenbaum Tennis Stadium. It was great as lots of people were out there to cheer on. I liked the samba drum bands in particular.

Hamburg is Germany’s second largest city (after Berlin) with a population of 1.8 million people. Hamburg’s official name is Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg. It makes reference to Hamburg's history as a member of the medieval Hanseatic League, as a free imperial city of the Holy Roman Empire, and also to the fact that Hamburg is a city-state and one of the sixteen Federal States of Germany. The port of Hamburg is the second largest port in Europe and the ninth largest in the world.

At kilometre 19 a guy came alongside me and we started to chat for a bit. Well it turned out that he was running right behind me for the whole time from the start. I didn’t even recognize him but no surprise as I was somewhere else with my thoughts. He thanked me for being his pace maker - cool - and we had a hug after the finish line.

After a well deserved hot shower we went further on to Flensburg to see Marino for the first time. I was tired and tried to excuse it with the deadline of a big uni project last Friday which did cost me lots of hours of sleep plus nerves. Well nothing helped – I fell asleep at first on the grass and later again on the coach :). Oopsy...

The first official day of the summer season - 21 June 2009

Wish you all a fantastic summer!

And for my dearest friends of the southern hemisphere:

Come on, you guys have enough sunshine :)

The Bro is back in Berlin... or the end of 264 days in Australia - 12 June 2009

You are now leaving OZ - reality straight ahead

Well it started with a short text on Thursday 4.11am. “Hi Sis I am at Sydney airport. Just checked in. I will be at Berlin Tegel tomorrow 12.55pm. Maybe you can pick me up. Please don’t tell anyone.” Tah Luk, tah for more than 30hrs of “What the fuck happened - is everything okay?”!!! But all good. That’s life and life conceptions change. Berlin welcomed Lukas with rain and same temperatures as in Sydney with the exception of being summer here and winter there :). At least there is one big advantage of this latitude: it is bright from 4.02am till 9.58pm at the moment. On the way home from the airport we took a pic in front of the Brandenburger Tor - the gate between East and West

Berlin. And then it was time to surprise the parents. Well if you want to know details please contact Luk directly. I think you should not do this with people let’s say over 40 unless you are keen for giving a cardiac massage and kiss of life... And YES I am SERIOUS. We all went for dinner to our favourite Mexican place after this shock. Luk turned a bit red as he apparently is not used to German beer anymore :). He says TAH SISTER HEART for this sentence. And I shall mention the advantages of terminating a backpacker’s life in Australia: toilet paper that doesn’t rip your arse bloody (oh Luk I didn’t know that your ass is so sensitive), standard pillows in 80cmx80cm, diminishable shower heads (yes I was wondering too about this point during the first days in OZ - it is so unpractical with fixed ones), no one who can steal your whole backpack again (well Luk gone is gone),... I don’t know. I still prefer Australia.

Carnival of Cultures - 31 May 2009

Berlin is a city with a large international population. Among the 3.4 million inhabitants of the German capital 450.000 do not have the German citizenship. Many more have a mixed ethnic background. The idea of a carnival which presents the cultural and ethnic diversity of Berlin was developed in 1995. This means at a time when – as a consequence to the political and economic changes since the fall of the Berlin Wall and the unification of the two German states – a lot of social, economic and cultural changes happened. Berlin attracted a growing number of artists from all over the world and a new cultural off-scene developed, which added to the cultural richness of Berlin. Berlin developed

into one of Europe's music centres with a focus on different styles of electronically generated music. With the concept of a carnival which focussed on the cultural richness of Berlin the Carnival of Cultures was the concept that was a success from the start. Over the last thirteen years the numbers of participants and visitors have risen continuously.

The street parde on Whitsunday is the highlight of the four day festival. The celebratory procession which lasts about nine hours featured around 4.500 participants from 70 different nations. Impressive masks, artistic costumes and magnificent floats astonished the 1.3 millions of visitors.

Avon Berlin Women Run for Breast Cancer Research - 16 May 2009

Hey girls I am so freaking proud of us!!!

Sophia, Anni and I participated in the 26th Avon Berlin Women Run this Saturday and what shall I say other than it was awesome. In total 14,341 women signed up for the 5km or 10km tracks. By walking, nordic-walking and running everyone helped to collect money for the Berlin Cancer Association. Our 10km run started at 6pm - with us 3,604 others. Too much oestrogen on one place was Sophia's statement. And she knows it best (because she has it on, so what of on as this makes her no one so quickly after - sorry that's an insider and Germish, a German proverb translated word for word). Yes she was right. It was very narrow the whole time. But nevertheless we all toped our best times. Our pasta night the day before was the secret - I'm very sure :). Anni our little running queen reached the finish line in 52:28 which is place 416, age group place 87. I made it in 54:26 (618, 123), Sophia in 55:28 (786, 171). Shit - that felt fast... Very happy and content!!!

A very big special thanks to Paps and Sophia for sponsoring our super fantasticly fancy running shirts plus print. Cheeeeeeeeers!!! We were dressed to kill ;). Girls I'm looking forward to more endorphin experiences with you. I really enjoyed this day and it's always fun to be with you. Not only for me but for people standing around us too. You will know what I'm talking about. Life has been running since 1984...

Coldplay for FREEEEEEEEEEEE - 15/05/09

Just to let you know guys - a free download of Coldplay's new life album LeftRightLeftRightLeft was made available. Get your free download from coldplay.com or http://lrlrl.coldplay.com/leftright.php - it's awesome. I'm listening to it all day and hope you will like my favourite band as well... :)!

Big 25 Berlin - 10 May 2009

So this was going to be my test if I can do the 10km under 1hr. I signed up for Big 25 Berlin which is Germany's most traditional city race. Once initiated by the French Allied Forces in West Berlin in spring 1981 the "25km de Berlin" was Germany's first big city race as the Berlin Marathon didn't lead through the inner city at that time. In the recent years a couple of additional competitions took place. So a 10km, a 5x5km and a 2km children's run have been brought up. Start and finish is still the Olympic Stadium. This year 9871 participants started in total - 4941 dared the 25km, 2955 like me the 10km. Well, I was pretty nervous to be honest. The run was great and a lot of people were cheering on. This was awesome. The best thing was the

amount of runners I overtook :) YESSSSS :) And then the last 400m on the blue lane within the Olympic Stadium where the Athletic World Championships will be hold in August... And then it was over... 55mins 53secs which is place 113 of the 10km female evaluation and place 616 in total. I was REALLY HAPPY!!! :) Thanks to Anni and Kamil for screaming my name so loudly that I heard you guys at the finish line. I am looking forward to next Saturday. Anni, Sophia and I will run the Avon Berlin Women Run for Breast Cancer Research. Hey girls: Life's been running since 1984... :) We will do it together!

By the way, my dad's colleague Robert ran (or should I say sprinted) the 25km in an incredible time of 01:39:22. Damn how impressive is that...

Hangover Brunch after the long Public Holiday Weekend - 03 May 2009

April 2009

East Side Gallery 26 April 2009

The East Side Gallery is a famous part of the Berlin Wall which as "Iron Curtain" divided the city into two parts for over 28 years. After the wall came down on 09 November 1989 (I already had lived in Berlin at this time by the way) this part of 1.3km in length became focus for an international action of over 100 artists from all parts of the world. Officially launched in September 1990 as the East Side Gallery, this

fragment is supposed to show less of the regime terror and their victims today but particularly the euphoria at the fall of the wall. Whereas the wall in Berlin itself almost completely disappeared the East Side Gallery has been put under monumental protection in 1992 on its site of origin. Unfortunately the concrete segments and the paintings are severely damaged due to the effects of weather, dirt, vandalism and graffiti. Therefore there will be an overall restoration before end of 2009 by the former artists who are coming once again to refurbish the East Side Gallery and are repainting their original work of art.

10km fun run during the 7th Spreewald Marathon 19 April 2009

So this was my first official 10km run. We headed spontaneously to Burg - the largest community within the Spreewald. Designated a biosphere reserve by UNESCO in 1991 the Spree forest is known for its traditional irrigation system which consists of more than 200 small channels. More than 6000 people used the weekend to participate by running, walking, inline skating or cycling over different distances. Paps and I chose the 10km fun run so that we could run together which was great and heaps of fun. The first 2km or so we chatted with a lady who ran marathon. I remember her first sentence when we showed our respect for her: "Actually I am not a runner type." Well it turned out that this lady ran a couple of marathons, ultra runs of 100km and 120km with huge differences in altitudes, 24hrs runs, wants to run New York this year... But I am not a runner type. Wow I can just take my had off to these top athletes. In the end we reached the finish line after 1:01:20. Both very happy :) Mutti too as she saw us early enough to take some pictures. Sorry for forcing you to get up at 5am :). We got a 300g green pickle medal as the region Spreewald is nationwide famous for these pickles.

Special thanks again to my dearest friend Stephanie Logan who convinced me to start running. You are awesome girl. I remember very well my first try of jogging last year in May - from Nobbys lifeguard tower to the lighthouse, haha how far is that  - 400m?? Today I did 17.15km - yes. I remember as well how I admired her for her 45mins runs. And now get this. I got an email today: "One more thing.... are you ready for this???... I'm running the Nashville Country Music Marathon this Saturday the 25th! :)" Holy shit Steph, girl you are incredible. You will rock the 42.2km whatever that is in miles :) By the way I wouldn't have said that you have an EXTRA TICKET for Coldplay in August and I wouldn't have asked if I wanna come... When and where is it exactly?? :) The three concerts in Germany in August are already sold out :( Just because I'm losing doesn't mean I'm lost, doesn't mean I'll stop, doesn't mean I will cross... VIVA LA VIDA!

The Easter Weekend with friends and family 10/04/09 - 13/04/09

I spent Good Friday with Sophia on our terrace as the weather was fabulous and had kind of Australia character :) . Just the beach was missing. We didn't made it to paint Easter eggs - unfortunately. Why do all these lovely childhood habits die? Nevertheless we fulfilled another annual habit on Easter Saturday: "Angrillen" - means having the first BBQ of the summer season.

On Easter Sunday we went to Moritzburg which is located close to Dresden in the state Sachsen. It is famous for its Schloss Moritzburg - a Baroque German castle. Between 1723 and 1733 it was home of Augustus II the Strong, elector of Saxony and king of Poland. There is also the little pheasant castle at the end of a cross axis to the main entrance route leading to the main castle on its formal island in the lake.

Easter Monday belonged to friends again. Sophia, Susy, Max and me, we grapped our bikes as it was still sunny and rode to a lake in Tegel which gave as 30km in total.

Luk's first day in Newcastle - 23/09/08Luk's first day in Newcastle - 23/09/08

From birthdays far far away... 10 April 2009

Hey bro heart! So this is your second bday in a row with thousands of kilometers between us. This year actually without any chance to call you. HAPPY 20th!!! Wish you all the best! Hope you're enjoying Australia's outback, especially the wildlife in your sleeping bag tonight. At least you survived KFC my dearest chicken-boy. You know what they say about KFC in Germany - they torture their chickens. Did you??? Haha reminds me of my first KFC experience in NZ: yum yum :) no sign of torture... But maybe your German accent is torture for the costumers? *lol* Just jokes. Have some fantastic weeks in Karratha, Brisbane, Byron Bay, Sydney and wherever you will be in the next time. Take care and talk soon. Much love. Und auch wenn du es hasst: den fettesten Knutschi ;)

A day in Cottbus - 09 April 2009

As uni haven't started yet and Paps had to work in Cottbus for one day I decided to come along with him. I can't really remember when I have been there for the last time and I have to say I was positively surprised. The inner city is nice even if it's pretty small for German standards - 100 000 inhabitants in total. Cottbus is located in the German state Brandenburg and is situated 125km southeast of Berlin. It is the cultural centre of the Lower Sorbian minority which is noticeable as many signs in the city are bilingual. Many customs have been kept alive. One well known Easter tradition is "Waleiern". Most likely it has its origin in an ancient magic spell for fertility to support the growth of fresh grass. On Easter Sunday children went out with their beautifully coloured eggs and tried to hit them into holes. Rolling eggs over fields and grass was supposed to have a positive influence on the growth. In this spirit: Happy Easter!!!

Berlin Half Marathon 05 April 2009

If I didn't run it I was at least volunteer. And it was fun. Damn I wish I would have run it too. I attended my duty at the water point shortly after kilometer 10. I have no idea how much bathtubes of tea we filled into cups and how many cups eventually went through my hands. A lot - a lot lot... I felt like a cup-filling-machine - no time to look up - no chance to descry Susy or Max! But I met up with them behind the finish line - both very very happy and relieved, not to mention their fantastic times of under 2hrs10mins. Well new motivation for me as I want to run the 10km during the Big 25 Berlin event on 10 May under 1hour.

March 2009

I am done with winter. I am so sick of this cold. But what shall I say: 21 March = beginning of spring time = 1°C, -7°C at night, it snowed a bit today. Find the mistake... Well at least I improved my skills as a pretender. Sunglasses are so not necessary.

A weekend in Flensburg

I had some fabulous days in Flensburg where Gyselle and Sven found a new sweet house to live. We are all pretty excited about unborn "Pablo" who will probably become a soccer champion as he is already kicking non-stop like hell.

Flensburg is situated in the North of Germany on the German-Danish border. It lies at the innermost tip of the Flensburg-Fjord, an inlet of the Baltic Sea. The North Sea is not far as well - as you can see in the pics and there you have tidelands for kilometres at low tide. Besides Flensburg is very very well known for the nationwide database of traffic violators, its beer Flens, the erotic company Beate Uhse and the all-day-greeting Moin Moin which means something like Morning actually which is weird at 8pm :).

Hi everyone! Well I'd never been a friend of facebook. Manic pictures where you are tagged -visible for lots of people although you hoped no one would ever see them. Over featured possibilities of sending stickers and presents, courting for super friendships in the Most Lovable Person Contest, showing the world the result of your last IQ test and which events you attend to, or poking someone (help, what is that for???). Potential danger of addiction and waste of time... But then I met some of the most awesome and lovely people I have ever got to know. They are all from the home country of facebook and I still remember their perseverative question "Are you on facebook now?". My semester 1 46 Scott Street Crew plus friends of it got me and convinced me and finally gave me some good reasons to join. And so my facebook profile was born and I was part of this big stalking community.

I copied and pasted some comments to share with you.

World Time Clock in Berlin. So that I never forget how far away our time zones are from each other... Berlin-Newcastle +10hrs, Berlin-Karratha +8hrs, Berlin-South Carolina -5hrs, Berlin-Vietnam +6hrs. At least till 29 March when daylight saving starts in Germany.

All pics are taken with my phone camera so sorry for the low quality.

February 2009

Hi guys! Today is the 21st of February 2009 - exactly one month after I left Australia. I decided to continue on with this website as it will be deleted automatically if I don't log in regularly. But I think it shouldn't because all these memories mean a lot to me and I still know how I felt at all entries when I posted them. Believe it or not but today I finally unpacked the rest of my suitcase - 30 days after I arrived. I still have the feeling that this here is just holiday at the moment and that I will return to Australia very soon. I miss it... Not a day goes by without looking on photos and thinking about this awesome time and all these great experiences.

Stay tuned and have a look from time to time.
